About Marshall-Tufflex

Marshall-Tufflex is a family-owned company that specialises in the design, manufacture, and supply of cable management solutions, particularly from PVC-U.

Since its war-time beginnings in 1942, the company has established a reputation for quality, reliability and value for money. And whilst still a family-run business, Marshall-Tufflex has become the UK market leader in cable management systems, with warehouses in Watford and Manchester. There is also a head office and manufacturing facility in Hastings.

Reducing environmental impact

Sustainability is an increasing concern across all sectors, and this is no exception for the construction industry – the UK’s largest user of natural resources and the largest producer of waste. To combat millions of tonnes of waste ending up in landfill sites, Marshall-Tufflex is revolutionising the way we think about recycling in the built sector.

For the past 30 years, the manufacturer has been using recycled material in its production of cable management products, reaching an average of 60% recycled content across its range in 2023.

The company has been able to accomplish these figures by using recycled material originating from PVC-U window frames. These are predominantly sourced from post-industrial waste (off-cuts from PVC-U window production) and post-consumer waste (from PVC-U windows removed from buildings at the end of their lives).

The benefits of using waste windows extend further: by using PVC-U windows in the manufacturing process, the company’s resulting cable management systems are exceptionally robust. This is because they benefit from the properties of the original window material – which was, in its former life, designed to withstand adverse external elements and last for many years.

However,  the drive for more sustainable practices does not end there. In addition to using recycled material in manufacturing, Marshall-Tufflex also seeks to improve its own impact on the environment as much as possible. The company is constantly seeking ways to reduce waste and has put in place measures such as dedicated recycling points, EV charging points and a fleet of electric lithium-ion battery forklift trucks. The company has also bought in new robotic machinery to increase production rates and packing times and new packaging made from 100% recycled cardboard that is 100% recyclable.

The requirement for sustainability information continues to grow

The company is also seeing growing demand for requests of carbon footprint information on their products. Embodied carbon reports for any product can be supplied and the figures are calculated using the CIBSE document TM65 – Embodied carbon in building services. CPD training sessions are offered regarding the use of recycled PVC in cable management systems and how its use can aid sustainability and the circular economy.

The company is campaigning for a more sustainable industry

Marshall-Tufflex is calling on the entire construction industry, including electrical contractors, to join its approach and is campaigning for a future where all PVC-U cable management products installed in buildings have been manufactured using at least 50% recycled material.

Whilst products made from 100% virgin materials have long been considered the most durable and cost-effective solutions, manufacturers like Marshall-Tufflex are changing the norm and bringing solutions that can have a real, positive impact on the construction industry.

The Marshall-Tufflex range of cable management products utilising recycled PVC-U are widely available in LEW branches.
